シラク大統領、英語のスピーチに抗議して一時退席

　昨日のIHT*1によれば、EUの経済サミット会議で、フランス経済人の英語でのスピーチに抗議して、シラク大統領が一時退席したとのことだ。

　これはその昔世界一の大言語として君臨したフランス語と近現代に大言語となって世界に君臨し続ける英語とのナショナリズムの問題であり、どちらも大言語であることに変わりはないのだから、目くそ鼻くその類の話なのだが、英語一辺倒に対する自己主張としては結構なことかもしれない。
　私が読んだIHTから少し引用する。
　When Ernest-Antoine Seilliere, the French head of the European business lobby, addressed a speech to the EU’s 25 leaders in English, Chirac interrupted him and asked why he was not using his mother tongue.
“I’m going to speak in English because that is the language of business,” replied Seilliere, former chief of the French employers’ group Medef, which has recently been sparring with the French government.
　In protest, Chirac, who speaks English well, stood up and left the room…
　英語を話さない者が不利益を訴え、英語が主流であることに抗議をするという方が小気味よいと私は思うけれど、シラク大統領のように、英語を話せる者が抗議をした方が、説得力は増すのかもしれない。*2
