ニールヤング(Neil Young)のLive at Massey Hall (W/Dvd)が、NYA(Neil Young Archives) PS(Performance Series)の第二弾として発売された。
“This is the album that should have come out between After the Gold Rush and Harvest. David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very exited about the takes we got on Harvest and wanted Harvest out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why. Love you, David.” –NYと書かれているように、これはAfter the Gold RushとHarvestの間の時期に、カナダはトロントのマッセイホールでおこなわれたライブソロコンサートである。
オープニングは、On the Way Home。
昔、Buffalo Springfieldのレコードヴァージョンとは違ったアコースティックヴァージョンが4 Way Streetで聞けたときは狂喜したものだった。また、Neil Young In Concertというブートレッグも嬉しかった。それはなによりマーチンのアコースティックギターの音とニールヤングの歌が好きだったからだ。独特の変わった個性的な声だし、オフキーだったりするけれど、だからこそ、そこに本物感と説得力を当時の私は感じていた。
Buffalo Springfield時代のニールヤングは自分の声や歌い方に自信がなかったと言われている*1。Massey Hallでの彼の歌声は実に伸び伸びしていて、私が好きになった頃のニールヤングそのままがパッケージされている。唯一驚いたのは、Heart of Goldだ。ここではA Man Needs A Maidとの組曲になっているピアノヴァージョンが聞ける。
一曲一曲の演奏が素晴らしいが、とくにOhioの演奏と歌声は素晴らしい。まさにたっぷりとロックしている(rocks plenty)。

*1:Buffalo Springfield時代は、率先して歌わせてもらえず、当時The Rocketsというバンドで演奏していたDanny Whittenと友達になって、彼から積極的に歌うように励まされたという逸話がある。
