Randy NewmanのSail Awayというアルバムの中には、Sail Away, Political Science, Burn Onなどの名曲が入っているのだが、このアルバムの中にMemo to My Sonという唄がある。
この唄の中に、When the going gets tough, the tough get goingという歌詞があって、これがなかなかむずかしい*1。
ひとつひとつの語彙はわかっても、全体のイメージやシンボルをつかむことができないのではないか*2。
The going gets toughは、決まり文句で、「状況が悪くなる」ということだ。
だから、When the going gets tough, the tough get goingは、「状況が困難になれば、不屈な者がそれを克服して先にすすむ」ほどの意味になる。
Randy NewmanのMemo to My Sonで、ランディ＝ニューマンは次のように歌う。

簡単に諦める三日坊主が勝つことはないし
