IHTでコラムを書いているウィリアム・サファイア(William Safire)というコラムニストは、その昔ニクソン大統領のライターとして、また保守派の論客として有名であり、彼の書くものを読んでいる暇はなかなか持てないのだが、Languageというコラムは時々読んでしまう。
12月3日付けのコラムで、Black is the new black.というのがあった。
これは、「黒」(black)という色は、宝石を目立たせる伝統的色であり、その不動の地位から、それに代わりうる流行色のことをnew blackということを、初めて知った。
それで、今は黒が流行っているようで、Black is the new black.というフレーズが冒頭に登場しているわけである。なるほど。
Black is the new black. Walking briskly down Madison Avenue in New York, I passed the window of the designer DKNY, but the display therein slowed my gait to a lugubrious plod. All the mannequins in the windows were clothed in funereal chic - outfits suitable for matronly morticians at an undertaker's convention.
The new black is defined under "new" in The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, Sixth Edition, as "a colour in such vogue as to rival the traditional role of black as a staple or background color for garments; figuratively, something which is suddenly extremely popular or fashionable." When there is not a color in a carload, the noncolor black becomes the new black. (British lexicographers spell color with an added u, and prefer which over that before a restrictive clause; in this case, I prefer that or no relative pronoun at all.)
あと、tonsil tennisというコトバは、「情熱的なキス」(passionate kissing)のことを言うのだそうだ*1。これなど、Sir James Murrayでなくても驚きだ。
あと、"Dictionary of American Slang"の紹介で、ASAPやAWOLなどの古典、定番と同様に、最近では、BTDT(Been there, done that)などと一緒に、WOMBATというのがあり、これは、"Waste of money, brains and time"（「時間、頭脳、カネの無駄」）だという*2。

私はオーストラリアでブッシュウォーキングをしていたら、地面の穴からたまたまウォンバットの大きな頭が出てきたときがあって、相当にびっくりしたことがあるから、このWOMBATは気に入った*3。

*1:Urban Dictionaryで調べてみたら、tonsil tennisは、a kind of kissとあった。tennisと表現した点が、いわゆるFrench kissのようなニュアンスを出しているのだろう。
