英語学習目的から、これまでいくつかの映画シナリオの聴き起こし(dictation)を、母語話者の協力を得て実践してきたけれど、自分が聞き起こせない理由としては、ふたつ大きな理由があると考えている。
ひとつは、読んでもそもそもわからない表現。もうひとつは、読んだら、なんだこんな発話をしてたのかと、まさに音の聴き取りができない問題。前者は、じぶんの語彙力などの英語力パワー不足。後者は、主に純粋に音の問題と考える。
まず前者の、読んでもわからない表現としては、語彙力不足の問題がある。fiendish など、自分にとって初出の語彙はもちろんのこと、"The Sound Of Music"には、修道院が舞台になっているところから、難しい語としては postulant（修道女志願者） や robing room 。またそれほど難しい語彙ではないのだが、自分が慣れていないため、基礎語彙であっても知らないものがある。たとえば、フランス語で女性修道院長のことを言うAbbess。
また、ドイツ語圏の語彙。The Sound of Music は、ナチス問題がテーマでもあるので、ヨーロッパの諸言語が味つけとして登場する。おそらく難しい語彙ではないのだが、自分がヨーロッパの諸言語に慣れていないため、基礎語彙であっても知らないものがある。たとえば、fraulein がそれだ。英語でいえば Miss。結婚していない女性をいうとのこと。
それから、相変わらず、知らない人名、知らない地名などの聴き取りが弱い。本作品は、こちらもヨーロッパ諸言語の影響もありそうだ。

第二に、読んだら、ああこんなことを発話してたのと、読めばわかるのに音声的につかめなかった例。

弱音で発話される前置詞や代名詞の所有格の聴き取りが弱いことがわかる。
また省略形の助動詞も弱音で発話されるため聴き逃すことが少なくない。
