「何名さまですか」に対して、日本人は人数を指で示す

　Lonely Planet Japanに次のようにある。

When you enter a restaurant, you’ll be greeted with a hearty irasshaimase! (Welcome!). In all but the most casual places the waiter or waitress will next ask you, nan-mei sama? (How many people?). Indicate the answer with your fingers, which is what the Japanese do. You will then be led either to a table, or a place at the counter, or a tatami room.(Lonely Planet Japan, p.113)

　この「人数を指で示す」(indicate the answer with your fingers)というのを、実際に観察してみると、案外多くの日本人がやっているから笑える。
　おそらくこれは、レストランの中が喧しく、店員の方は大きな声をあげるにしても、客の方としては、大きな声を上げるよりも、指で示した方が品が良く明確であるというようなことから来ているのかもしれない。
　いずれにしても、こうしたロンリープラネットの指摘がちょっと面白い。
