今朝のIHTに、Albert R. Huntという署名入りの記事で、アメリカ合州国のマーク・フォーリーの事件が”In Foley case, sex takes back seat to hypocrisy”(Bloomberg News)と題して分析されていた。
「政治家とセックスはどこでも共存していてよくあること」(Politicians and sex coexist everywhere.)なのだけれど、イギリスのスキャンダルはもっと華々しい(panache)し、フランスの指導者たちはもっとオープンで誰も気にしない(no one cares.)、そしてアジアといえば、質問をしないし話さないのが普通と、一般論としての各国のセックススキャンダルを評価したうえで、フォーリーのスキャンダルの場合は、「偽善」(hypocrisy)が問題の中核だと言っている。("Hypocrisy is at the core of the Foley scandal, too.)
今回のスキャンダルは極めて単純だ。
“The story is simple. Foley, who headed the House caucus on missing and exploited children, had lurid, indeed sickening exchanges with teenagers who had come to Washington to work as pages in Congress. On multiple occasions, the house speaker, Dennis Hastert, was warned about Foley’s behavior and basically did nothing.”
つまり、こともあろうに、子どもの失踪や弱者につけ込む事件を担当していたフォーリー議員が、国会で働く青少年の付き添い人に性的メールを送っていたという事件であり、こうしたフォーリー議員の行動が、幾度となく、デニス・ハスタート議長の耳に入っていたにもかかわらず、基本的に何もしなかったという事件に他ならない。
それで、このブログで先日も紹介したが、それまで同僚にそのような問題があると知られていないのに、アルコールのせいにしたり(Alcohol made me do it).、若いときに性的ないたずらをされたなどと、弁護士を通じてマーク・フォーリー元議員は自己弁護をしているのだ。
また、マーク・フォーリーは、自分がゲイだと弁護士を通じて述べているが、この署名記事が書いているように、「中心問題が彼がゲイだと示唆するような努力がすでに垣間見られるが、ナンセンスだ。性的嗜好性は全く関係がない。これほど卑猥でないにせよ、同性愛者じゃなくたって同様の問題を起こすのだ」(”Already there is an effort to suggest that the central issue is that he is gay. Nonsense. Sexual orientation is irrelevant; a heterosexual predator would have been equally offensive, if not quite as salacious.”)と書いているが、これが論理というものだろう。
記事は続ける。
「他の共和党員たちもしっぺ返しをくらうだろう。というのも、彼らはフォーリーの行為を聞かされていて止められなかったのだから。私の同僚のマーガレット・カーソンが書いているように、彼らは子どもを救うことよりも議席を守りたいだけなのだ。ハスタートは、疲れ切って、残り90日を議長というポストで、議会の立場と誠実さ心配しているとほのめかした」(“Other Republicans will pay a price because leaders were told about Foley’s habits and failed to stop him. As my colleague Margaret Carlson wrote, they were more interested in saving a seat than saving a child. Hastert, a tired and spent man who will survive in his post for only the next 90 days, suggested he worried about the standing and integrity of the House.”)が、それで通るのか。
この記事のパンチライン(clincher)はこうだ。
「ダグ・ベイリーが言っているように、議会を心配するより、付添い人の若者たちの立場と誠実さこそを心配すべきだったということだ」(“As Doug Bailey says, he should have worried instead about the standing and integrity of these young pages.”)。
