Patrick Humphries の ’Paul Simon still crazy after all these years’を読んでいて、アルバムPaul Simonの二曲目『ダンカン』について次のようにあった。
Originally planned as the title track, ‘Duncan’ was another striking song, which again displayed Simon’s penchant for utilizing non-rock instrumentation to gain an idiosyncratic sound.（「もともとはタイトル曲になる予定だったのだが、『ダンカン』もいい唄だ。個性的なサウンドを得るための非ロックの曲というサイモンの好みを再び示した」）*1。
Here the backing is supplied by Los Incas, with whom Simon had kept in touch since meeting them in Paris in 1965, and who had supplied the backing track for the limp ‘ElCondor Pasa’ in 1970. Lincoln Duncan is the laconic hero of one of Simon’s finest ever narrative songs; employing deft imagery and an economic sense of lyric, Simon vividly portrays the life of an underdog and climaxes with his first sexual triumph, leaving the listener with a precise feeling of time, place and character.（「バックは1965年に出会って連絡を取り合っているロスインカスによるもので、彼らは1970年の弱い『コンドルは飛んでいく』のバックをすでにつとめていた。リンカンダンカンは、物語調の唄の中で口数の少ない主人公で、簡潔な歌詞と巧みな描写によって、敗北者の人生を表現し、聞き手に、時間・場所・性格を正確に伝えながら、彼自身の性的な素晴らしい体験によって唄は上り詰める」）。
後半で"my long years of innocence ended"（「長い私の童貞の時代は終わった」）と歌われるように『ダンカン』は大人になる唄である。
唄の冒頭は、主人公が眠ろうとしているのにモーテルが安普請で*2隣の部屋の音が聞こえてしまう設定になっていて、"Couple in the next room bound to win a prize They've been going at it all night long"（「隣の部屋のカップルは賞でももらおうと決意しているに違いない 一晩中夢中になってやっているんだから」）で始まるのも象徴的だ。
S&G時代の名曲The Boxerにも、次のような歌詞がある。
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there（拙訳）
七番街の娼婦たちの手招きくらいしかなかったんだ
これは正直に告白するけど、あまりに寂しくて
僕は彼女たちにお世話になったことが度々あった
『ダンカン』の最後のところでギターと主への感謝が表現されているのだが、この指の描写も性的な表現に聞こえてしまうはおそらく私の深読みではないだろう。
