NPRのMusicで、Janet RenoとEd Petterson編によるSong of Americaの紹介を聞いた。

Janet Renoは、1993年から2001年にかけてクリントン政権時代の司法長官(Attorney General)だった。Janet Renoは音楽分野の人間ではなく、今回のCDが出されるまでJanet Renoと、例えばBob Dylanとの結びつきはない。
そのCDとは、アメリカ合州国を代表する50曲が収められたCD3枚組みのSong of Americaである。
John Mellencampの演奏によるWoody GuthrieのThis Land is Your Landが50曲目に入っているのは定番としても、James TaylorとCarly Simonの子どものBen Taylor演奏によるNeil YoungのOhioも収められている。
他に、ウクレレ奏者のジェイクシマブクロが、Stars & Stripes Foreverを演奏しているのも眼をひく。
50曲がオリジナル演奏でないのは、歴史的な曲を次期の若い世代に引き継いでいきたいという趣旨だそうだ。
