映画「怒りの葡萄」の話を昨日書いた。
オクラホマでは農地がオークションにかけられ売却されて、農地が土埃となり、トラクターがやってきて接収していったと、Howard Zinnの”A People’s History of the United States”にある。
オクラホマで何が進行していったのか、スタインベック（John Steinbeck）の「怒りの葡萄」(The Grapes of Wrath)に描かれていると、Howard Zinnは小説から引用している。
孫引きで恐縮だが、以下、引用する。
And a homeless hungry man, driving the road with his wife beside him and his thin children in the back seat, could look at the fallow fields which might produce food but not profit, and that man could know how a fallow field is a sin and the unused land a crime against the thin children…
住む家もないひもじい思いをしている男が、横に妻と、後部座席には痩せこけた子どもたちを乗せて、利益は生み出さないかもしれないが食べ物は生み出すかもしれない休耕地(the fallow field which might produce food but not profit)を眺める。
いかに休耕地が神に対する冒涜(sin)であり、痩せこけた子どもたちに対する犯罪(crime)であるか*1。
この”the fallow field which might produce food but not profit”（「利益は生み出さないかもしれないが食べ物は生み出すかもしれない休耕地」）という表現に、「怒り」を感じるのは私だけではあるまい。
先の引用に続けて、以下が続く。
And in the south he saw the golden oranges hanging on the trees, the little golden oranges on the dark green trees; and guards with shotguns patrolling the lines so a man might not pick an orange for a thin child, oranges to be dumped if the price was low…
そして南では、その男は木々にぶらさがる黄金のオレンジを見た。濃い緑の木々に実るオレンジだ。痩せこけた子どものために食べさせたいだけなのだが、オレンジが取られないように護衛がショットガンをもって守っている。値段が下がれば捨てられることになるオレンジであるのに…
ハワード・ジンの著作を教室授業で使う際に役に立つ”Teaching with Voices of a People’s History of the United States”に、”Why do you think The Grapes of Wrath resonated with so many Americans? Do you think it was controversial when it was first published? How and why?”という質問が冒頭にのっていた。
これら質問の意味するところは、小説「怒りの葡萄」が多くのアメリカ人に共感をえたのは何故なのか。「怒りの葡萄」が最初発行されたときは、物議を醸しだしたことを知っていますか、ということだろう。
映画「怒りの葡萄」の最後の場面、母親とTom Joadが別れる場面がある。
その箇所が、ハワード・ジンの”Voices of a People’s History of the United States”に引用されている。
スタインベックの小説「怒りの葡萄」は、1939年4月に初版が出されたとき、毎週1万部のペースで売れたと、Howard Zinnが解説して、Tom Joadの次のセリフを引用している。
I been thinkin’ a hell of a lot, thinkin’ about our people livin’ like pigs, an’ the good rich lan’ layin’ fallow, or maybe one fella with a million acres, while a hundred thousan’ good farmers is starvin’.
豚のようにしか生きられない俺たち。休耕地になってる豊かな土地。10万もの農民が飢えているのに、その一方で、100万エーカーの土地をもつ奴の存在。
こうトム・ジョウドに作家ジョン・スタインベックが言わしめるとき、小説「怒りの葡萄」が言いたいことは明らかだ。
*1:一般に、sinは、神に対する罪、神様に対する冒涜という意味で、crimeは法律的にみて犯罪のことをいう。
