ハワード・ジンの講演をiPodで聞いていたら、“The Art and Politics of College Teaching”という他の学者の書いた本を材料にした話が出てきた。
ハワード・ジンによれば、これは大学で教えたい人のためのマキャベリズム的指南書(a kind of a Machiavellian guide to people who want to teach in college)であるといい、それをさかなにして語る。
博士号をとるまえには賢こいようにふるまう(play smart)べきで、博士号をとったらバカに見せる(play dumb)というのが、この本のすすめる処世術であるようだ。
教授であるならば、政治活動や人類の大義に身を投じるなどということはしてはいけない。高度な教育機関としては、そうしたことに眼を向けてはならない。自らの政治的結論や社会的思想を明らかにしないようにすべきだと。
つまり、これはハワード・ジンのしてきたこと、生き方とは反対の事例として奨励されているということになる。だから、笑いを誘うおかしな講話となるわけである。
“Can I involve myself in causes, crusades and political activism as a professor?” Answer. “The institution of higher education may not look kindly upon such activities.” (laughter) “Be wary of introducing your political conclusions or social thought into classroom situations.” “Be on guard not to take sides, if it’s possible to avoid it at all. (interval) Play dumb.” (roars of laughter) That’s interesting. (laughter) Until you get your PhD, the advice is “play smart.” Then after you get your PhD, “play dumb."
話は続き、目上の教授陣に対しては、ある程度従順になれというアドバイスもおかしい。
この本を、教え始めた頃自分が手にしていたら、自分はどうなっていたろうかという問いもよいが、「多分、理事になっていただろう」というclincher(とどめをさす言葉）が実におかしい。これはまるで落語ではないか。
ハワード・ジンは、有名な左翼的・進歩的歴史学者であったが、その講演には、実にユーモアがある。私には、ハワード・ジンが落語家と思えるほどだ。
“Be somewhat submissive to the senior faculty.” The only thing about that I didn’t understand was the word “somewhat.” (laughter) I thought that took courage. If I had had that book available to me when I started my teaching career, who knows what I might have become? (laughter) A dean, maybe. (laughter)
