大昔の話になるが、中学時代に洋楽に興味をもち始め、高校生時代にウエストコーストロックに夢中になった俺にとって、アルバムが出るたびに躊躇なく買っていたアーティストの一人がNeil Youngだった。アルバム'Harvest'ももちろん夢中になったが、'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'(1969)も'After the Goldrush'(1970)も好きだった。新曲ばかりの野心作とも言えるライヴアルバム'Time Fades Away'(1973)も俺の期待を裏切ることはなかった。とくに自叙伝的な'Don’t Be Denied'にはまいった。
だからNeil Youngのアーカイブズのライヴアルバム'Tuscaloosa'(2019)の発売は、変な言い方になるが、興味をひかれてならなかった。演奏曲は、アルバム'Neil Young'(1969)、'After the Goldrush'(1970)、'Harvest'(1972)、'Time Fades Away'(1973)、'Tonight's the Night'(1975)からのもの。 1973年2月にアラバマ州タスカルーサ市のアラバマ大学で行われた演奏で、バックバンドは the Stray Gators*1（「迷いワニ」） 。ベースギター Tim Drummond、スチールギター Ben Keith、ドラムス Kenny Buttrey、ピアノ Jack Nitzsche。アルバムの中では、"Out on the Weekend"からストレイ・ゲイターズが登場するかたちとなっている。基本、"Harvest"のときのストレイ・ゲイターズと同じである。
ライブであるし、ニール・ヤングの歌唱は不安定なところがあるが、アルバムの中ではとりわけ"Don't Be Denied"が必聴である。
実は'Tuscaloosa'は発売されてまもなくして入手したのだが、Neil Youngを好きになった頃の音源だから、後悔するはずもない。
ジャケットの裏側写真には、'Time Fades Away'にもあったツアー用のトラックが使われている。
あの頃、インターネットやYouTubeがあったら、大変だったろうな。

Neil Young has announced the release of a new archival live album, Tuscaloosa. Recorded on February 5, 1973 at the University of Alabama, it stems from Young’s tour with his backing band the Stray Gators, which was eventually documented on his Time Fades Away LP. Below, check out the tracklist and listen to the Tuscaloosa rendition of “Don’t Be Denied.” The album is due out June 7.
