ポール＝サイモン（Paul Simon）が6年ぶりに新譜”Surprise”を発表するとIHTで紹介されていた。
ポール＝サイモンもすでに64歳。
「「サプライズ」(Surprise)は、解答を与えるよりも質問をすることに焦点があたっているアルバムで、「唄はちょっと捕らえどころがない」と、サイモンは認めている。「唄の中に感情や考えは渦巻いているけれど、それが何であるのか正確に言うことはむずかしい」」(“Simon acknowledges that “Surprise” is an album that’s much more focused on asking questions than providing answers. “The songs are a little bit elusive,” he said. “They have emotions and thoughts swirling through them, but you can’t exactly say what they are.”)、と。
今回の「サプライズ」(Surprise)は、U2やTalking Headsをプロドュースしたことでも有名なブライアン＝イーノ(Brian Eno)の協力もあるようだ。
「サプライズ」(Surprise)は、音的な実験と遠回しの歌詞のたくさん詰まった野心的で挑戦的な作品(“Surprise,” an ambitious and challenging work full of sonic experimentation and oblique lyrics)だそうで、グレイスランド(Graceland)という20年前のアルバムから始まったポール＝サイモンの音楽的彷徨からすれば、今回のアルバムが受けても受けなくても構わないという本人の姿勢のようだ。
「ニール＝ヤングは尊敬しているけど、ヤングの比較的新しい作品にそれほどは興奮しない」(He said that while he respected Neil Young, for example, he was not that excited by Young’s newer work)とサイモンは言っているようだが、「ポップミュージック界で60歳であるということは、おかしな時期だ」(“It’s a weird time to be a 60-year-old in pop music”)と自覚しているポール＝サイモンの新譜は期待できるだろうか。
