ニュージーランドのことをマオリ語でアオテアロアというが、このアオテアロアと、ハワイ諸島、そしてイースター島、これらを結んだ三角地帯のことをポリネシア文化圏と呼ぶ。
現在ニュージーランドに暮らすマオリは、このポリネシアのハワイキという伝説的な場所からやって来たと言われているが、もっと遠い昔にはポリネシア人はそもそもアジアからやって来たという説もある。
アオテアロアは、「長き白き雲のたなびく地」と一般に訳されているが、実はこの名称の解釈としては10くらいの解釈が可能で、「昼間の長い地」という解釈も成り立つのだが、これは南太平洋に浮かぶ大地に対する南下してきたポリネシア人の印象が表現されているからに他ならない。ニュージーランドといえば英語が通じる英語圏という印象を私たちは持っているが、先住民マオリがアオテアロアと呼んだ大地と先住民マオリに対して、イギリスによるニュージーランド化を進行させたというのが今日のニュージーランドがもつ意味象徴に他ならない。
こうして私たちがニュージーランドについて語るとき、歴史的にみて、アオテアロアを無視することはけっしてできない。今日、ニュージーランドが、マオリによって、アオテアロア・ニュージーランドと呼ばれるゆえんである。

The Maori word for New Zealand is Aotearoa, and the triangle area connecting Aotearoa, the Hawaiian Islands, and Easter Island is called the Polynesian Cultural Area.
The Maori living in New Zealand today are said to have come from a legendary place in Polynesia called Hawaiiki, but there is also a theory that Polynesians originally came from Asia in the distant past.
Aotearoa is commonly translated as "the land of the long white cloud," but in fact the name can be interpreted in about ten different ways, including "the land of long daylight," which is an expression of the Polynesians' impression of the land in the South Pacific as they traveled south. We Japanese think that New Zealand is an English-speaking country where English is spoken and understood, but the symbolic meaning of New Zealand today is that the land that the indigenous Maori called Aotearoa and the indigenous Maori were transformed into New Zealand, in a word, Anglicized, by the British.
Thus, historically speaking, when we talk about New Zealand, we can never ignore Aotearoa. This is why New Zealand is called Aotearoa New Zealand by the Maori today.
