Patrick Humphriesの”Paul Simon still crazy after all these years”によれば、”He confessed that he had no idea what ‘the mama saw’ that was against the law, except that it was probably something sexual.”（「おそらく性的なことという以外は、法律違反の、そのママが見たものが何なのかわからないと彼は告白した」）とある。
(The New) Rolling Stone ALBUM GUIDEによれば、“Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” has to be the funniest Catholic-guilt song ever written by a Jewish guy.（「『僕とフリオと校庭で』は、一人のユダヤ人によって書かれた最も可笑しなカトリック教的罪の意識の唄」）と紹介している。
最後まで明かされない内容は性的なもので同性愛という見方が普通だろうが、書かれていない以上わからないと言わざるをえないのだ。
